direct to indirect speech
An exclamatory sentence shows great
emotion or feelings.
At the end of the lesson the students
should be able to:

Rules
1. Reporting verb said/said to should be changed to exclaimed.
2. Use the conjunction word “that”.
3. Look for the prevailing emotion.
4. Change the pronouns and tenses of verb.(the tense of the verb is
one step back)
5. Remove the expression used, the comma, exclamatory point and
quotation mark.
Ex.
Direct-He said, “Hurrah! My friend has
come.
Indirect- He exclaimed joyfully that his
friends had come
She said to
us, “Are you ready?”
She asked us
if we were ready.
She said,
“Alas! I am undone!”
She exclaimed
sorrowfully that she was undone.

at least 2 exclamatory sentences and act it out. A member of the group will

a direct and indirect speech using exclamatory sentence. In a happy and
sorrowful situation.
